Top 5 Tips for Photographing your Baby at Home

Learn from one of Adelaide’s Most Experienced Photographers so you can still have Beautiful Photographs in between your professional sessions.

Little Oak Studio have been capturing beautiful photographs of babies and families since 2011 and are going to let you in on a few tips to make sure you get those gorgeous shots in between your professional sessions.

We are super lucky in this digital world that we all have a camera on us most of the time! So, let’s help you feel confident in getting those day-to-day photographs of your baby at home!

1.      Find a well-lit area - Find a position near a window to create soft filtered light and have your baby at a 45-degree angle to your light.

2.      Always shoot your camera down baby’s face - This softens the light on your baby’s face and avoids dark shadows. Note: there should be a little butterfly shadow under their nose.

3.      Make sure your baby is comfortable and happy - Give your baby a feed before and don’t be scared to take the time to give them top-ups. Check the room temperature and turn on the heater if needed. A full belly and a warm environment do wonders!

4.      Don’t forget to include close ups - Time goes so quickly, and babies grow fast. Make sure you capture their tiny, perfect details such as fingers and toes.

5.      Less is more - For beautiful and simple memories, make sure to remove any unwanted items or clutter from your background.

And a BONUS Tip - Don’t put too much pressure on yourself to get ‘Perfect’ photographs, enjoy your precious new baby. Any photographs you capture will be lifelong memories and your family will adore looking back on them in years to come.

Our favourite stages to capture your little one professionally would be as a Newborn and these are generally taken when bubs is about 2-3 weeks new. Then 6-9 months, you may hear these sessions referred to as “Sitter Sessions”, when bubs is sitting independently but not yet moving too far. Another milestone to capture is 12 months of course, what better way to celebrate their first birthday than with a family photography session with the Little Oak Studio!
